Over the past 20 years, the TOPtoTOP Global Climate Expedition has circumnavigated our blue planet conducting field-based research for universities, scientists and research organizations. Since embarking on this journey we have sailed the Seven Seas, explored the seven continents by bike and climbed the Seven Summits of the world. Visiting the world’s most remote regions and their native inhabitants, we have been sharing innovative solutions to protect, preserve and conserve our natural environment. We have made it our goal to explore the top examples and inspire students to take action.
With the TOPtoTOP Adventure School we have created a free exploration-based education tool that allows young people to directly connect with our ongoing expedition by an online community and learn how to implement theoretical concepts directly into practice.
The Idea
Exploration-based learning is an active learning approach which helps children to learn through curiosity and inquiry. Learning through exploration is key to success, freedom and happiness. Research has shown that students learn best through direct, hands-on experiences.
The World is changing at an incredible pace. We are facing unprecedented social, economic and environmental challenges.
To navigate through such uncertainty, we will need to constantly align our skills and develop creativity, self-confidence, and perseverance. We need to respect others and care about our natural environment.
Education is the key to changing the world for the better. Today’s students are the decision-makers of tomorrow shaping the planet’s future.
The ADVENTURE of outdoor sports is one of the best “medicines” to save our planet. It allows exploration-based learning and is good for the health of our children. But it is also good for the health of our mother earth. Outdoors you connect with nature. This unique relationship is essential to care more.
ADVENTURE unites students around the world to solve the challenges we face today. Doing so, they contribute to a more sustainable future and build on their own bright live adventure.
Who we are
Since 1999, we are on the TOPtoTOP Global Climate Expedition and inspired more than 140,000 students in more than 100 countries to act more sustainably for our planet. We have seen all kinds of different school systems. In 2005, our first child Salina was born in Chile, followed by Andri born in Patagonia 2006, Noe in Australia 2009, Alegra in Signale 2011, Mia in Switzerland 2015, and Vital in Iceland 2017. All our kids have been educated on our ongoing expedition. We are continually striving to build the best education that will allow them to shape the world for the better.
Since schools are closing worldwide due to the Corona crisis, we have the desire to share our experiences with affected schools and families – This with the ultimate goal to help young people to become global citizens who care.
How ADVENTURE works
ADVENTURE is an exploration-based learning community. It is designed for schools and students of all ages and from all around the world.
Students subscribe to a project in order to help solve a social or environmental challenge that we are exploring during the ongoing global expedition. We will outline the basic skills and provide the tools needed to acquire them.
After the project, we encourage and support participants to take an active role in their local environment or volunteer on the ongoing expedition globally.
How ADVENTURE inspires you to learn for life:
- By applying theory directly to practice. Example: You are more motivated to learn mathematical concepts for an open-water dive certificate than abstract ones.
- By acting today and not exclusively learning for tomorrow. Example: Getting the skills for the open-water certificate enables you to carry out an underwater clean-up right now.

- By communicating with co-participants and thereby having a great opportunity to improve your language skills and learn about other cultures and perspectives.
